The carbon footprint of my technolust

Posted by: Sue Hickton | July 9, 2007 | No Comment |

Most of you are probably aware of the Live Earth concert that was held this weekend, starting in Sydney. It got me to thinking…….what sort of imprint am I leaving in regards to my obsessive use of technology?

My PC is routinely left on 24 h a day (except when it over heats from the hammering it gets, and then I turn it off overnight to cool down), not to mention my machine at work so I can remote access. Then there is my mobile phone/pda, tablet, laptop, ipod, digital camera, PSII, Foxtel, DVD player, TV and so on.

I did some digging and found a carbon footprint calculator. The results were horrifying to say the least :(

As you can see, myself living as a frugle single, I am still producing on average, over 600 Kg of carbon dioxide per month. and the worst bit of it, its not even from the car! I am a carbon Ho!

My monthly carbon footprint

I might have start thinking how about I can reduce my total footprint all over so that I can justify my continued technolust.

  1. Replace more light bulbs with those new energy efficient ones (I had started, but thinking that I need to finish off the house)
  2. Turn off more lights. I already live without having house lit up like a xmas tree, but guess I need to try harder.
  3. Investigate being Earth Friendly with Synergy (Western Australian power provider). I have calculated, that to 100% offset my power usage, I can pay an extra $13.29 per bill. This money goes to green projects run by Synergy. Lets say I wanted to offset this usage by only 25% I would pay $3.32 extra per bill. Think I need to get my total bill down first.
  4. Use natural light more…..stop turning lights on in the house if I don’t need to!!
  5. I need to leave my pc on at work over night, however, I CAN turn the monitor off
  6. Have both computer training labs turn pc’s off every night – participants can get to class 10 minutes earlier to boot up.
  7. I have a solar booster, but must remember to turn it off after a few hours and not leave on for days at a time.
  8. Maybe turn fridge temperature down a smidge now that it’s winter
  9. Wear warmer clothes at home so gas heater not cranked up to max with me running around in shorts
  10. Must practice turning computer off every night before bed [*cries*]
  11. Find a place for recycling batteries and stuff. And dead mobiles while at it [top drawer is a graveyard]
  12. Stop watching TV while on computer. Not really paying attention to either when I do that

so in theory [in my head at least] if I can commit to actioning the above, perhaps, this will go in part someway to offsetting the carbon footprint from my technolust…….
